Our Moon is 4.5 billion years old with an average distance of 250,000 miles from Earth. The moon travels at a average speed of 2,288 miles per hour and will travel 1,423,000 miles in one orbit around the Earth. Water was discovered on the moon in November 2009. The footprints left on the moon by the apollo astronauts will still be visible 10 million years time. Our moon rotates around it's axis as it rotates around the Earth at the same speed, this is why we always see the same side of the moon we never see the back of our moon from Earth. On average every three years we have two full moons in one calendar month the second full moon is called a Blue Moon. The Luna month consist of eight moon phases and takes 29.5 days to complete. In a survey taken in 1988 13% of those surveyed thought that the Moon was made of cheese. 59% of our Moon’s surface is visible from Earth. Our moon has only been walked on by 12 people no one person has walked on the moon twice. The first spacecraft to reach the moon was Luna 1 a soviet craft in 1959. Our moon is the fifth largest in our solar system. Our moon is moving away from us at 3.8 centimetres each year when our moon was formed it was about 14,000 miles away from Earth it is now about 250,000 miles. The manned lunar missions were named Apollo, in mythology Apollo is actually the God of the Sun. Selenophobia is the name given for the persistent and irrational fear of the moon.
